As one of the oldest tea traditions in the world, matcha is the green goddess of superfoods. A medicine is for one disease only, but green tea is a kind of panacea that can prevent and treat all sorts of ailments.
— Esai, 12th century Zen Buddhist monk

One of the world's richest sources of antioxidants, matcha has a very high concentration of antioxidant catechins and polyphenols. Per gram, matcha has an incredible ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) rating of 1384 compared to 253 for goji berries, 227 for dark chocolate, 31 for broccoli and 26 for spinach. It has been found to contain up to 137 times more antioxidants than regular green tea. This wealth in antioxidants protects the body from free radical damage, oxidative stress and the development of inflammation, infections, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other conditions.

EGCG, or epigallocatechin gallate, is one of the powerful catechins found only in green tea, known to boost metabolism, burn fat and reduce fat storage. EGCG suppresses the enzyme that breaks down norepinephrine, the hormone neurotransmitter that signals the body to burn fat cells to use as energy, resulting in increased fat burning. Drinking green tea is also known to suppress the appetite leading to less energy consumption.

Not only does drinking matcha protect the body against bacterial and viral infections but also against fungal infections. Many people are unaware when they have Candida, a common condition where overgrowth of yeast is present in the body. Candida can wreck havoc on the immune system and cause digestive issues, fatigue and severe allergies. Drinking matcha has an anti-fungal effect and the catchins in matcha can kill yeast overgrowth. Matcha is also known to reduce the risk of cancer and autoimmune conditions such as type 2 diabetes.

Due to the high antioxidant content of green tea, drinking matcha regularly can be a natural and effective remedy for skin conditions including dry and oily skin, inflammation, acne, sun damage and signs of aging. Many skincare products, particularly in Korea and Japan, include green tea extract as an ingredient for the beneficial antioxidant catechins. Matcha is also popular in natural scrubs and clay masks, and can be easily used in natural remedies at home such as a spot treatment, mask or toner to achieve glowing, blemish-free skin.

Matcha is high in chlorophyll, the pigment found in all green plants including the Camellia sinensis plant. Chlorophyll is known to speed up wound healing, improve liver detoxification and bind to cancer-causing carcinogens before they reach the gastrointestinal tract. As with all green plant food and vegetables, drinking matcha promotes optimal liver function and helps to flush out toxins and heavy metals from the body.

For centuries, Zen Buddhist monks sought the help of matcha to aid long periods of meditation and would drink it before and during their practice. Matcha contains about a third of the amount of caffeine found in coffee and it is released into the body slowly, resulting in sustained energy over 4-6 hours, due to the amino acid found in green tea leaves called L-theanine. This amino acid is produced when tea leaves are shaded from direct sunlight during the shade growing process. My Matcha Fix Organic Matcha Green Tea is produced by taking young shoots from the green tea plant and shading them for 4 weeks before harvest to ensure high amounts of L-theanine. Unlike coffee, matcha provides energy without the jitters or coffee crash.

As well as sustained energy, Zen Buddhist monks drank matcha for increased mental clarity and focus, which is particularly important in meditation, yoga and pilates. Drinking matcha beforehand has been found to enhance the efficiency and benefits from activities that require focus on breathing, awareness and mindfulness. It is also the key to enhanced productivity, performance and a healthier state of mind.

Matcha is a natural remedy for stress and anxiety and can improve sleep quality, cognitive function and overall mental wellbeing. Unlike coffee, matcha does not cause adrenal fatigue or increase cortisol, the stress hormone, in the body. Instead, matcha is known to reduce cortisol levels, stabilise blood sugar and produce a state of serene and calm alertness.
